My name is Perri van Rossem, I am a certified Yoga Therapist, Teacher, Student, and Spiritual Seeker. With this being my first blog post, I would like to say hello and welcome to my blog.
The last 12 months have been a time for growth and transformation for me. As of a year ago, Living Yoga Studios and the group classes I offered were discontinued. If you have worked with me in the past, you should know that I did not retire, but changed the concentration and focus of my work from teaching classes and running a studio, to practising specifically as a Yoga Therapist.
Living Yoga Studios is undergoing a transformation. As of June 30, 2017 I will no longer operate under the name Living Yoga Studios. The new name of my business better reflects my focus and the scope of my practise. With that being said, I’m proud to announce:
Practice With Perri – Limestone Yoga Therapy
Along with this new name comes a new focus. As a yoga therapist, I will be offering yoga therapy practise, workshops, retreats, and much more. The majority of my work does take place in a private one on one setting. While the majority of my yoga therapy practise takes place one on one, the workshops I offer bring the therapeutic approach to teaching specific health-related topics to a group. The Pelvic Floor and The Breathe Well to Live Well workshops address general health topics that affect every human being. To find out more about how you can participate in these, please visit my Workshops Page.
I will also be leading The Yoga and Fun Retreat at the magical Mystica Resort in Lake Arenal, Costa Rica again, the 2018 Yoga & Fun, Your Inner Paradise Retreat will run April 6th – 12th, mark it on your calendar. If you reserve before August 1st you receive a $200.00 discount.
This week-long all-inclusive retreat will include two daily two hour classes. The classes will include, but not be limited to, asana, pranayama and meditation practices. The design of the classes is to provide an experience, education and opportunity to delve deeply into the Self. This retreat is designed to be accessible for everyone regardless of experience. Learn More With Online Content
In order to further educate, my new blog and website will be an online hub for information related to yoga therapy and health. My online content will aim to provide you information on the yoga therapy practise, workshops and retreats.
What Is Yoga Therapy?
You may be wondering: What exactly is yoga therapy? One of my most influential teachers TKV Desikachar defines yoga therapy in this way:
“Yoga Therapy, derived from the Yoga tradition of Patanjali and the Ayurvedic system of health care refers to the adaptation and application of Yoga techniques and practices to help individuals facing health challenges at any level manage their condition, reduce symptoms, restore balance, increase vitality and improve attitude.”
The adjunct skills I bring to my Yoga Therapy practise focus on resolving problems. This begins with developing a therapeutic relationship with each client through a personal assessment, an understanding of the underlying and correlative factors contributing to the person’s condition. In addition to assessing the condition of my clients I apply yoga therapy techniques and then assess the results. I observe, whether the healing process is following an appropriate trajectory, is the practice working in the way it has been design to or not? Has progress been made? To this end I need to understand not only how the body moves but how the biomechanics of movement, breath, mind and constitution, lifestyle etc., is impacting healing and recovery.
Yoga therapists are not better than yoga teachers nor are yoga therapists just an advanced yoga teacher. The focus and application of yoga’s tools and techniques in a therapeutic setting is about achieving different results. The goal is different.
Yoga therapy does not diagnose or treat any specific disease or condition prescriptively. As a yoga therapist I seek to teach the person who is experiencing physical, mental, psychological, emotional and/or spiritual suffering, appropriate yogic tools and techniques that they can practice so that they can learn what they can do, for themselves, to ease their suffering, resolve their problems and improve their health and well-being.
